Alyn Hess was born in Freeport, Illinois in December 6, 1939. He earned degrees in the arts at Beloit College and landscape architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. As a landscape architect, he worked in Philadelphia; Rockford, Illinois; and Milwaukee. Hess was a tireless activist on behalf of gay rights in the 1970s and 1980s.
